How to Tell a Trained Upper Cervical Specialist From a General Chiropractor

You can find a trustworthy upper cervical chiropractor by checking two things before you book. The doctor has completed certification in a named upper cervical protocol, and the office measures your misalignment on your own images before anyone touches your neck. Both checks shape your outcome. Upper cervical care focuses on the two vertebrae that balance your head over your brainstem.

A shift of one degree there changes how the rest of your spine sits. Most people running this search already paid for a general adjustment that twisted the neck and gave them three good days. Once you know which credentials and which imaging to ask about, a wide directory search narrows to a short list of doctors whose results you can verify.

What You Will Learn

Know the Four Main Upper Cervical Protocols

Upper cervical chiropractic encompasses several distinct methods, each using its own imaging and correction. Doctors train in a single protocol and practice that protocol throughout their careers, so the name on a certification tells you what happens during your visit.

Search by protocol name to skip the hundreds of general practices a broad search returns.

Protocol How the Doctor Finds the Misalignment How the Correction Happens
National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA) Precision X-rays taken at set angles and measured in degrees Sustained light contact below the ear, with no twisting
Blair Upper Cervical Cone beam computed tomography (CT) imaging of each joint surface Hand contact matched to your own joint anatomy
Atlas Orthogonal Cervical and full-spine films analyzed on a grid A percussion instrument delivering a fixed force
Knee Chest Upper Cervical Specific Cervical films read against thermographic patterns Hand contact taken in a kneeling position

Search the Certification Directories First

Every recognized protocol publishes a list of doctors who completed its training and passed its testing. Start on those lists, because a general web search buries specialists under hundreds of general practices.

Each directory sorts by city or by distance, so you can pull every doctor within driving range in a few minutes.

Where to Look What It Gives You
NUCCA.org doctor locator Certified NUCCA doctors by state and city
BlairChiropractic.com directory Blair-trained doctors with their training level listed
AtlasOrthogonality.com find-a-doctor Atlas Orthogonal doctors by region
UpperCervicalHealthCenters.com Several protocols on one searchable map
International Chiropractors Association (ICA) Council on Upper Cervical Care Doctors active in the field’s research and teaching

Set your search radius wider than you would for a general practice.

Upper cervical doctors practice in small numbers, so patients regularly drive forty-five minutes to reach one who measures results. A correction that lasts also spaces your visits further apart over the year, which keeps that drive manageable.

Ask the Phone Questions That Reveal Measurement

A five-minute phone call tells you most of what a website leaves out. Offices that measure their work answer these questions immediately, while offices that have added upper-cervical language for marketing hesitate.

Ask the front desk directly and listen for specifics about equipment.

Ask This What a Trained Office Says
Do you image my neck before the first correction? Yes, at protocol-specific angles on our own equipment
Do you re-image after the correction? Yes, on the same visit, to confirm the change
How do you check that my alignment lasts? We re-measure at set intervals and show you the numbers
Does the adjustment involve twisting or popping? No, we apply light contact for a few seconds
Who reviews my case? Our doctor reviews your imaging before your report of findings

An office that images you, corrects you, then sends you home without a second measurement gives you an opinion. An office that hands you two pictures of your own neck gives you evidence.

Read Reviews for Repeated Details

Star ratings reduce an entire practice to one number. Written reviews reveal more. Look for repeated mentions of:

Praise for a friendly front desk is positive, but it tells you little about clinical outcomes.

Compare What the First Visit Includes

Upper cervical offices build the first visit around evaluation, so compare the contents before you judge the price. A low consultation fee that skips imaging ends up costing you more once you pay for scans elsewhere.

First Visit Element Why It Helps You
One-on-one doctor consultation The doctor hears your history and decides whether your case fits the protocol
Protocol-specific imaging Your correction gets calculated from your own anatomy
Neurological and structural testing Baseline numbers let you track real change later
Written report of findings You see the measurements and the plan before care starts
Honest case screening A trained doctor refers you elsewhere when upper cervical care will not help

Fees change by region and by how much imaging a protocol requires, and most initial evaluations run $150-$400.

Ask whether the office bills insurance or works on a cash basis. Ask what a full correction plan costs from start to finish, so you know the total before your third visit.

Judge the Report of Findings

The report visit separates careful practices from the rest. Your doctor shows you your own images and points out the shift measured in degrees. You then hear a plain answer about whether correction helps the symptoms you came in with.

A doctor who promises resolution for every condition before testing you has skipped the step that makes this work precise. Trust the doctor who gives you numbers and a timeline you can use to check your own progress.

The Reason Relief Keeps Expiring

Things that hold have structure.

Every treatment you have tried worked on the symptom. The muscle that was tight. The joint that was stuck. The nerve that was screaming. And each one worked, right up until your body pulled back to the position it was in before you walked in.

Because the position never changed.

You have been treated by good people who never measured your structure, because measuring it takes an instrument almost no one owns and training almost no one has. Not their fault. It just means the actual question never got asked.

You cannot correct what nobody has measured. Everything else is maintenance.

Your MRI Was Not Wrong. It Was Answering a Different Question.

An MRI is built to find disease. Tumors. Herniations. Ruptures. The things that need a surgeon.

When yours came back clean, it did its job perfectly. It told you that you do not have the thing it was designed to find.

But it was never built to measure how your head sits on top of your neck. By how many degrees. Or how that position interferes with the nerves running through it.

Different question. Different instruments. Different results.

What we measure

The One Thing Almost No One Measures

I am Dr. Justin Brown, founder of Atlinea.

Our doctors correct the alignment at the very top of your spine, and we do it with the specific precision required to return your body to the position it needs to be in to heal the way it was designed to.

That is the entire focus. Not a menu of services. One correction, measured and made properly.

Where This Actually Starts

It is called The Comprehensive. Sixty minutes, one on one with one of our doctors, and it runs in three parts.

01. We Listen

You talk. We listen. Your whole history, everything you have tried, what it has cost you, and what you have given up because of it. Not a five minute intake. An actual conversation about your specific problem.

02. We Learn

Then we measure what nobody has measured.

What is working. What is not. And why.

03. We Lead

You leave knowing the root cause, why this has never held, and exactly what correcting it would take. In plain language, with your own numbers in front of you.

Sixty minutes to finally get the answer that years of appointments never gave you.

This is what The Comprehensive actually looks like: a full structural exam, not a quick adjustment.

If We Cannot Correct It, We Will Tell You On Day One

Here is our promise.

If our doctors do not find a structural cause that we can correct, they will tell you on day one, and we will not take you on as a patient.

No treatment plan. No package. No follow up call three days later.

You leave with the truth and a direction. Not a sales pitch.

We would rather lose the patient than sell you another rental.

What It Costs To Find Out

Before You Book

Is this just a chiropractor?

Our doctors correct one specific thing: the alignment at the top of your spine. That is a narrower and more measured discipline than general adjusting, and it starts with instruments rather than hands. If you have been adjusted before and it did not hold, this is the reason we start with a measurement instead of a table.

Because sixty minutes of a doctor’s time is real, and a free appointment is an appointment people do not show up for. The $45 reserves the slot. If you come in and decide not to move forward, you get it back.

Then we tell you on day one and we do not take you on as a patient. You leave with what we measured and a direction to take it.

That depends entirely on what we find, and anyone who quotes you a timeline before measuring you is guessing. You will get a specific answer at the end of your Comprehensive, based on your own numbers.

Possibly. If your Comprehensive points to a structural cause, imaging is the next step, and your $45 is credited toward it.
